Show a diagram in Confluence

Put a live, read-only view of a diagram on a Confluence page with an embed link and the Iframe macro, and revoke it when the page no longer needs it.

An embed link puts one view of a diagram on a Confluence page: a read-only picture, drawn from the saved diagram, with pan and zoom. When the diagram changes, the page shows the new picture. When you revoke the link or it expires, the page stops showing it.

Before you start

  • You are an editor of the diagram, or its owner. The diagram is saved in your library.
  • The diagram's classification is within what your organisation allows for embeds, Internal by default. Restricted diagrams are never embedded.
  • Your Confluence site is in the sites allowed to show embeds. Browsers refuse to show an embed inside any site that is not on the list. Owners and security administrators set it (step 1); if you are neither, ask one.

Show a view in Confluence

  1. Allow your Confluence site

From the command palette (Ctrl K), open Integrations settings (embeds, Jira)…. Under Sites allowed to show embeds, use the preset Atlassian Cloud site…, or add your site's address in the form https://host (scheme and host only). Select Save.

  2. Open the embed section

Open the diagram and select Share…. In the share sheet, open Embed elsewhere. The palette command Embed this view in Confluence or Teams… opens it directly.

  3. Create the embed link

Choose the View, the Link lifetime (up to 90 days, or less if your organisation sets a shorter maximum) and the Paper (Auto, Light or Dark). Select Create embed link.

  4. Copy the link now

The link is shown only once. Select Copy link; keep Copy embed code for a page that accepts HTML.

Anyone who holds the link can open it

Outside the allowed sites, the link still opens as a page of its own, for anyone who has it, until it expires or is revoked. Share it only where you would share the picture.

  5. Paste it in Confluence

On the Confluence page, insert the Iframe macro and paste the link. On Confluence Data Center, use the HTML macro with the embed code, or the Widget Connector where your administrators turned it on.

The Confluence page shows the view of Claims Platform; you can move and zoom in it, and the title of the view is shown.

Revoke an embed

Open the share sheet of the diagram, then Embed elsewhere. Active embed links lists each link with its view, its expiry and whether it was viewed. Select Revoke: the link stops working now, and the Confluence page no longer shows the view.

Variants and limits

  • One view per link. To show three views, create three links.
  • Members get an Open link. A member of the workspace who views the embed can open the diagram in iyedy from it.
  • Free. On a Free personal account, the embedded sheet carries the export mark under it.
  • Enterprise. Embeds are off until an owner turns them on, with a 30-day maximum lifetime by default.

If it doesn't work

Confluence shows an empty frame or a refusal

The Confluence site is not in the sites allowed to show embeds. Add it in Integrations settings (embeds, Jira)… (step 1), then reload the Confluence page. The link itself does not change.

“This diagram is classified Confidential; your organisation allows embeds up to Internal.”

The diagram is above the embed ceiling. Lower its classification if that is right for its content, or show it another way. See Classification and AI ceiling.

“Embeds are turned off for your organisation.”

An owner or security administrator turns them on in the integrations settings, under Embeds.

“Only editors and the owner of this diagram can create embed links.”

Ask an editor of the diagram to create the link, or to give you the editor role.
