Add a view
Add a view when a reader needs another angle on the same model, for example a Data flow view of the Claims Platform for its privacy review. The view draws from the model at once; nothing is copied.
On this page
Before you start
- A diagram you can edit, open in the editor. See Create a diagram.
- The part of the model the view is about. A Containers view needs a system, a Components view a container, a Deployment view an environment, a Sequence view a scenario, a BPMN view a process. See View types.
Add the view
- Select what the view is about
On the canvas, select the element the new view should be about, for example the Claims Service for its Components view. With nothing selected, iyedy takes the first system, container, environment or scenario of the model.
- Open the New view menu
In the left panel, find the Views list and select New view, the + at its head. You can also press Alt Shift N. If the left panel is closed, Ctrl B opens it.
- Pick the type
Choose a type: System context, Containers, Components, Deployment, Network, Data flow, Integration, Sequence or BPMN. A type the model cannot feed yet is greyed out and says why, for example Needs a scenario in the model.
- Name it
iyedy adds the view at the end of the list, opens it, and selects its name, New view (Data flow). Type Claims data flow and press Enter.
Manage the views of a diagram
Right-click a view in the Views list, or open its View actions menu, for:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rename | gives the view a name of your own; leave it empty to keep the generated name |
| Duplicate | makes a copy, Claims data flow (copy), to try another layout |
| Move up, Move down | changes the order of the sheets; you can also drag a row |
| Hide view | takes the view out of the list and of the presentation; bring it back from the + menu, Show ‘Claims data flow’ |
| Delete view… | deletes the view and its layout; the model does not change |
To move between views: PageUp and PageDown, Alt 1 to Alt 9 for the first nine, or Go to view… from the palette (Ctrl K).
You do not need to add the usual views: iyedy already draws a System context view for each system, a Containers view once it has containers, a Deployment view per environment, and a Sequence and a Dynamic view per scenario. Add a view when you want another type, or a second view of the same type with another layout.
If it doesn't work
The type I want is greyed out
The model has nothing that view can draw yet. Add a container before a Components view, an environment before a Deployment view, a scenario before a Sequence view. The menu says which, for example Needs an environment in the model.
The new view is about the wrong system
iyedy took the system of your selection, or the first one. Delete the view, select an element of the right system, and add the view again.
“Ask the Assistant to add to sequence views.”
You cannot place shapes on a Sequence or a BPMN view: their steps come from a scenario or a process. Describe the change to the Assistant. See Draw a sequence or dynamic view.
