Comment on a view
A comment sits on the thing it is about: an element, a relationship or a whole view. It keeps the version it was written against, so a later reader knows what you saw. Mention someone with @ to ask them, and resolve the thread once it is settled.
On this page
Before you start
- You can comment on the diagram: Commenter role or more in an organisation, or a share with Can comment. With a view-only access, you read the comments but do not write them.
- A larger screen than a phone. On a phone, comments are read only.
Comment
- Select what you comment on
On the canvas, select an element, a relationship or a view.
- Start the comment
Press Ctrl Alt M, or choose Comment on the selection in the Share menu.
- Write and mention
In Write a comment… (@ to mention), write what you see, for example: Fraud Scoring is called synchronously: what happens if it is slow? Type @ and a name to mention someone; only people who can read the diagram are proposed. Select Comment.
The thread shows in the Comments part of the panel, and a pin marks it on the canvas. Anyone you mentioned is told.
Reply, resolve, reopen
- Reply answers in the thread, with Reply… (@ to mention).
- Resolve closes the thread once it is settled; Reopen brings it back.
- Edit and Delete act on your own comments. Deleting a comment erases its text for everyone; the other comments of the thread stay.
- Each thread shows Written against version 14: the version its author saw.
Find a comment
The Comments part filters by Open, Resolved or All, and Only the selection keeps the threads of what you selected. To open the panel on comments, choose Open comments and review in the Share menu (Open comments and sign-off on your own).
On your own: notes for yourself
As long as nobody else can read a diagram of My diagrams, a comment is a note for yourself: the field reads Add a note for yourself… and nobody is proposed for a mention. Once you share the diagram, the people you invited can read and answer them.
Let the Assistant draft a reply
On a thread, Draft a reply asks the Assistant to write a reply. Read it first: nothing is posted until you select Reply, and nobody is mentioned unless you pick them. See What the Assistant does.
If it doesn't work
“You can read comments here; your role does not allow writing them.”
Your access lets you view, not comment. Ask the owner of the diagram for Can comment, or in an organisation for the Commenter role. See Roles and permissions.
The person I want to mention is not proposed
Only people who can read the diagram can be mentioned. Share the diagram with them first. See Share a diagram.
“This text is too long.”
A comment holds up to 8,000 characters. Split it into several comments, or reply in the thread.
