Compare states and plan a roadmap

Once your diagram holds a baseline and a target, iyedy shows each view in either state with what changed marked, lists the gap between two states with the work packages that deliver it, and draws the states and work packages on a time axis.

Before you start

  • A diagram whose model declares states: it shows a state bar at the top right of the canvas. Without states, the commands below say This model has no states yet. What states are: see Baseline, transition and target.
  • Anyone who can open the diagram can compare and read the roadmap. To keep a state on a view, you need edit rights.

Show a view in a state, compared

  1. Open the view

Open the Containers view of the Claims Platform.

  2. Pick the state and the comparison

In the state bar, set State shown in this view to Target and Compare with to Baseline. The canvas shows a Preview, read-only: new elements are marked new, the ones that go are marked retiring, the changed ones changed.

  3. Keep it on the view

Select Keep on this view. The view now draws the target compared with the baseline, in its exports and in the PDF pack too. Show the working model in this view undoes it.

Check your work. The view's title shows the state it draws, and the split Claims Service appears as two new containers next to the retiring one.

Read the gap between two states

  1. Open the gap analysis

Press Ctrl K and run Gap analysis between two states…. Choose From Baseline and To Target.

  2. Read it

The dialog lists the objects added, removed and changed, with What changes and the Work package that delivers it. Under Changes that no work package of these states delivers you see what nobody has planned yet.

  3. Go to a view

Under Views with changes, choose Open this view compared to see one of them on the canvas. Gap table… saves the gap as a table for a spreadsheet.

Draw the roadmap

Run Roadmap of the states… from the palette. iyedy draws the states on a time axis and the work packages in lanes: each work package ends at the state it delivers. A dashed bar has a start or an end that iyedy placed itself. States without a date are spaced in order. Save the roadmap as SVG or PNG for a slide.

In the review pack

When the model declares states, the PDF pack gets a roadmap section with the states, the work packages and the gap. See Create a review pack (PDF).

If it doesn't work

“This model has no states yet”

The diagram has a single working model, without states: there is nothing to compare. Use versions to compare the diagram with its past.

“No difference between these states.”

The two states you picked hold the same objects. Pick the baseline and the target, or check that the later state lists its changes.

“The PNG could not be made here. Download the SVG instead.”

Your browser could not draw the picture. Save the SVG, which keeps the roadmap sharp at any size.
