Export a view
Export the view on screen as a picture for a document or a slide, or as a file another diagram tool opens. Exporting never changes the diagram, and an SVG or PNG from iyedy opens again in iyedy.
On this page
Before you start
- A diagram open on the view you want to export, for example the Containers view of the Claims Platform. Anyone who can open the diagram can export it, a guest too.
- The export draws the view as it is: the same layers, the same title block, the same legend. Hide what readers should not see first, see Layers, annotations and grid.
Export the view
- Open Export
Press Ctrl E, or run Export… from the palette (Ctrl K). The dialog is titled Export the view Claims Platform · Containers.
- Pick a format
Select a row. iyedy builds the file at once and your browser saves it.
Group Row Use it for Image SVG a sharp picture for a wiki, a document or the web; it opens again in iyedy Image PNG a picture for slides, chat or e-mail; it opens again in iyedy Tools draw.io editing the drawing in draw.io (diagrams.net) Tools Mermaid a wiki or a repository that renders Mermaid Tools PlantUML a tool chain that renders PlantUML Tools C4-PlantUML C4 diagrams in PlantUML, with the C4 standard library Dossier Review dossier (personal account: Sign-off pack) several views and the review tables in one PDF, see Create a review pack (PDF) What each format keeps and loses is in Export formats.
Copy instead of saving
To paste a view straight into a document, a slide or a chat:
| Command | Key | What lands on the clipboard |
|---|---|---|
| Copy as PNG | Ctrl Shift C | a PNG at twice the screen size |
| Copy as SVG | Ctrl Alt C | the SVG of the view |
| Copy as Mermaid, Copy as PlantUML, Copy as C4-PlantUML, Copy as draw.io XML | from the palette | the text of that format |
Select elements first and the copy holds only them, without the title block and the legend.
Good to know
- Not every format fits every view. C4-PlantUML has no form for a Data flow, an Integration or a Network view: the row says No C4 form for this view: use PlantUML. On a BPMN view, PlantUML and C4-PlantUML say Use draw.io, SVG or PNG.
- On Free, every export carries a small Made with iyedy mark at the foot of the sheet, outside the title block. Pro and Pro+ exports have none, and an organisation's exports never do.
- An SVG or PNG from iyedy holds the model, so importing it gives you back an editable diagram. Share it only with people who may see that model.
If it doesn't work
“Not exported: this view has nothing to export.”
The view is empty, or every element in it is hidden. Add elements, or open another view. A diagram with no view at all says Add a view first: there is nothing to export yet.
“Your browser blocked image copy here. Download it instead.”
Some browsers refuse to put an image on the clipboard. Select Download PNG, or export the PNG from the Export dialog.
A format row is greyed out
That format cannot draw this type of view. Point at the row to read why, and pick the format it names.
